Public health should not solely focus on how many years it can add to life

If public health officials are ever going to make great strides in advancing the health and wellness of our nation, than we need to remember that 1) All change is voluntary, and 2) most people think in terms of healthspan (richness and substance to life), not simply lifespan (life years).

While we focus on preventing and better managing disease, we can’t forget about the social and cultural issues that invariably affect each of us, both independently as families, and interconnectedly as communities.
